District Activity Day Winners


Recently four Alleghany 4-Hers traveled to Mecklenburg County to participate in a 17 county district-wide presentation competition. Youth can either do a poster or PowerPoint presentation from 5-12 minutes in length. Categories range from small and companion animals to careers and entrepreneurship to outdoor cookery. 4-Her's have be be at least 9 years old to participate competitively. Youth present to a room of judges, spectators and other presenters. After presenting, judges are then allowed to ask questions. Winners are awarded medals, cash prizes and scholarships to attend NC 4-H Congress.

Gretchen Huysman (not pictured) did a presentation entitled "Stream Restoration" including all the steps involved in a stream restoration project, cost, equipment and was a gold medal recipient. Khalil Lawson (left) spoke on "The Living Soil" and how we are destroying the very earth that supports life and was a silver medal winner. Mikayla Edwards (middle) taught the group about "Types of Fish in the Little River" and placed with a bronze medal, and Natasha Hamm (right) taught us how to pass, set, and spike with her presentation on volleyball entitled "In Your Face" and recieved a silver medal.

Gold and silver medal recipients are invited to present at state level competition in Raleigh during NC 4-H Congress. Congratulations to all of our winners.

RUN WITH THE PACK 2010

Have you ever wanted to attend a NC State Football game and run on the field before the players come out? If so, this is your chance! North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives and North Carolina 4-H are teaming up to give you the chance to RUN WITH THE PACK! Twelve North Carolina 4-H youth who are entering 4th, 5th, or 6th grade and are active in the 4-H program will be chosen for this incredible opportunity! 4-H’ers who are selected will run on the field prior to the September 4th NCSU Football game against Western Carolina.


Game time is at 6:00pm. Each 4-H’er who is selected will receive 4 game tickets as well as 4 meal tickets! If you are interested in this opportunity, please fill out the registration form found HERE.

NC 4-H Congress 2010

Alleghany 4-Hers Khalil Lawson, Natasha Hamm and Tiffany Mount recently traveled to the campus of NCSU for a week of NC 4-H Congress. Congress is an annual event where youth from all across the state come together to participate in a variety of workshops, presentations and Hands to Service project. This year youth and adult volunteers bagged pasta which will provide over 30,000 meals to families in need.

4-H Investigates


We have just had a space open up for 4-H Investigates July 27th-29th (day camp). This is a great opportunity for a 6th-8th grader to participate in DNA Analysis, Fingerprinting and solve a murder mystery. We will also be taking field trips to the Surry County Jail, a funeral home and the Animal Diagonistic Lab in Elkin not to mention visits from the Narcotics and Arson Dogs of Wilkes County. Cost of the camp is $35.

SPACE WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL 5PM ON MONDAY, JUNE 28TH!!

Ashe County 4th of July Livestock Show

The Annual 4th of July Livestock Show in Ashe County will be held on Saturday, July 3rd at the Ag. Expo site in W. Jefferson. Weigh in begins at 9:00 am and the show will start at 10:00 am. Open Horse Show

Come join us on Saturday, June 26th for a fun-filled day at our Open Horse Show. The gates open at 7:30 am, registration begins at 8:00 am and the show starts at 9:00 am. There are divisions for ALL age groups. For a copy of the program and class list, click here.

Challenge Course

Come try out your team building and problem-solving skills on the new Alleghany Challenge Course. With more that 10 low ropes elements, prepare to be challenged and learn how to work
together to overcome obstacles. Activities are specific for age group. A snack will be provided. We will meet at the County Office Building (90 S. Main Street) parking lot.

4-H Investigates

Who killed Henry Ward? Participants will become detectives and determine who killed Henry Ward in a hit-and-run car accident almost 100 years ago. To solve this crime, you will utilize various techniques including blood typing, forensic anthropology, fingerprint analysis, impression analysis for tires and shoes, hair analysis, blood spatter and DNA evidence. Join us as we travel to East Wilkes Middle School to learn about forensic science and play the role of a CSI detective!


Space is limited and preference will be given to youth who have not participated previously. (Parents, be advised that field trips will include the Surry County Jail, a funeral home and the Elkin Animal Diagnostics Lab.) Transportation, lunch and snacks are provided. We will meet at the County Office Building (90 S. Main St.) parking lot each morning at 8am.

Tube the New

July 16 ~ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Ages: 12-19
Cost: $15 ~ Limit: 10

Join us as we tube the New! We will spend the afternoon tubing our way down the New River. You MUST be able to swim in order to participate in this activity! Make sure you wear your bathing suit, water shoes (NO flip flops!) and sunscreen. You will also need to bring a towel and a change of clothes. A snack will be provided. We will meet at the County Office Building (90 S. Main St.) parking lot.

What Can Green Do For YOU?

What can you get from 4-H? Take the time to explore what 4-H has to offer. We will participate in sessions that will teach you about the many events, contests and benefits that are available to you through 4-H. Some of the sessions that are tentatively scheduled are: poultry judging, horticultural, dairy contests, livestock contests, horse contests, presentations, Teen Events (Ambassador, AIRE, Teen Retreat Citizenship), Project Records, Expressive Arts (make it with wool, entertains, fashion revue, photography, horse, all poster contests, etc), and electric. Lunch & Snacks will be provided.
