4-H Investigates


We have just had a space open up for 4-H Investigates July 27th-29th (day camp). This is a great opportunity for a 6th-8th grader to participate in DNA Analysis, Fingerprinting and solve a murder mystery. We will also be taking field trips to the Surry County Jail, a funeral home and the Animal Diagonistic Lab in Elkin not to mention visits from the Narcotics and Arson Dogs of Wilkes County. Cost of the camp is $35.

SPACE WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL 5PM ON MONDAY, JUNE 28TH!!

Ashe County 4th of July Livestock Show

The Annual 4th of July Livestock Show in Ashe County will be held on Saturday, July 3rd at the Ag. Expo site in W. Jefferson. Weigh in begins at 9:00 am and the show will start at 10:00 am. Open Horse Show

Come join us on Saturday, June 26th for a fun-filled day at our Open Horse Show. The gates open at 7:30 am, registration begins at 8:00 am and the show starts at 9:00 am. There are divisions for ALL age groups. For a copy of the program and class list, click here.

Challenge Course

Come try out your team building and problem-solving skills on the new Alleghany Challenge Course. With more that 10 low ropes elements, prepare to be challenged and learn how to work
together to overcome obstacles. Activities are specific for age group. A snack will be provided. We will meet at the County Office Building (90 S. Main Street) parking lot.

4-H Investigates

Who killed Henry Ward? Participants will become detectives and determine who killed Henry Ward in a hit-and-run car accident almost 100 years ago. To solve this crime, you will utilize various techniques including blood typing, forensic anthropology, fingerprint analysis, impression analysis for tires and shoes, hair analysis, blood spatter and DNA evidence. Join us as we travel to East Wilkes Middle School to learn about forensic science and play the role of a CSI detective!


Space is limited and preference will be given to youth who have not participated previously. (Parents, be advised that field trips will include the Surry County Jail, a funeral home and the Elkin Animal Diagnostics Lab.) Transportation, lunch and snacks are provided. We will meet at the County Office Building (90 S. Main St.) parking lot each morning at 8am.

Tube the New

July 16 ~ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Ages: 12-19
Cost: $15 ~ Limit: 10

Join us as we tube the New! We will spend the afternoon tubing our way down the New River. You MUST be able to swim in order to participate in this activity! Make sure you wear your bathing suit, water shoes (NO flip flops!) and sunscreen. You will also need to bring a towel and a change of clothes. A snack will be provided. We will meet at the County Office Building (90 S. Main St.) parking lot.

What Can Green Do For YOU?

What can you get from 4-H? Take the time to explore what 4-H has to offer. We will participate in sessions that will teach you about the many events, contests and benefits that are available to you through 4-H. Some of the sessions that are tentatively scheduled are: poultry judging, horticultural, dairy contests, livestock contests, horse contests, presentations, Teen Events (Ambassador, AIRE, Teen Retreat Citizenship), Project Records, Expressive Arts (make it with wool, entertains, fashion revue, photography, horse, all poster contests, etc), and electric. Lunch & Snacks will be provided.

Wet 'n Wild Emerald Pointe

July 7 ~ 8 am – 5 pm
Ages: 13-19
Cost: $35 ~ Limit: 10

Come out and enjoy a day of fun in the sun! That morning we will begin with a short workshop on water and sun safety. Then, the rest of the day will be spent enjoying the water park. Transportation, lunch and your ticket into the amusement park, will be provided. You will need bring money for any additional drinks/snacks you may want while in the park and for any souvenirs you may wish to purchase. We will meet at the County Office
Building Parking Lot (90 South Main Street). Please be sure to bring your bathing suit and a change of clothes, as well as, a towel and sunscreen.

Fortune Seekers - Making Green

June 29-July 2 ~ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Ages: 11-14
Cost: $35 ~ Limit: 6

Are you interested in making money? Do you know what a business plan is? Do you like to have fun? If your answers were yes, YOU must join us for four days of hands‐on activities that help youth identify talents and interests, and define a vision for starting their own business. We will leave the Extension Office at 8 am and travel to Wilkes County.

Bring a bag lunch and drink each day.

Chef & Child

June 28-July 2 ~ 9:30 am – 11:30 am
Ages: 8-12
Cost: FREE ~ Limit: 15


Do you like to cook or want to learn how? Come out and join us & a professional chef for a week-long series where you will learn about nutrition, safety and food preparation. Each day you will cook & eat a variety of recipes. We may also visit a local restaurant for a behind-the-scenes tour. We will meet at the Alleghany County High School Family & Consumer Education Classroom. Space is limited and preference will be given to youth who have not participated previously.

Linville Caverns ~Linville Falls


June 21 ~ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Have you ever wondered what the inside of a mountain looks like? Here's your chance to find out! Join us as we spend a day hiking the inside and outside of some beautiful mountains and make our way to a spectacular waterfall. Lunch & snacks provided.
