North Carolina Youth Institute

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences is delighted to invite high school youth to participate in the North Carolina Youth Institute on Friday, April 5th, 2019. This program is part of the Global Youth Institute and World Food Prize and provides a platform for students to research and give recommendations to solve key global challenges that range from food insecurity, access to potable water, poverty, human rights and more.

To participate, students research a global issue and write a two-three page paper under the supervision of a teacher/mentor (using these downloadable guidelines). Each teacher/mentor must register their student delegate nominee(s) and submit each student's research paper online by March 1, 2019. 9-12th grade students in the 2018-2019 school year are eligible to apply.

On April 5th, students attend the day-long program at NC State University and share their research paper among peers and a panel of judges. Hands-on workshops, field trips, keynotes and career development will round out the event. There is no registration cost to participate in the Institute, however, both student and teacher/mentor participants must organize their own transportation to and from the event in Raleigh, NC.

The Global Youth Institute: the top students at the North Carolina Youth Institute will be competitively selected to represent the State of North Carolina as delegates at the Global Youth Institute, held in Des Moines, Iowa in October 2019. There, they will join 400 other outstanding high school students and teachers from across the United States and around the world for an exciting three-day program to interact with Nobel and World Food Prize Laureates and the more than 1,000 global leaders from 65 countries attending the World Food Prize's annual international symposium.

The North Carolina Youth Institute is hosted by North Carolina State University with the generous support of College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and North Carolina 4-H. For more information on how to participate in the North Carolina Youth Institute, contact the North Carolina State Coordinator Dr. Lori Unruh Snyder at lori_snyder@ncsu.edu or at (919) 515-4070.

North Carolina State 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest

Did you know that the average worker bee lives for just five to six weeks. During this time, she’ll produce around a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey! Two million flowers have to be visited to gather enough nectar to make one pound of honey!

4-H'ers are invited to explore more about the fascinating story of the hardworking honey bee by participating in the North Carolina 4-H Beekeeping Essay contest. The essay provides a platform for youth to creatively express their working knowledge and research of the craft of beekeeping. The 2019 Essay Topic is "Honey Varietals, State to State" Each jar of honey reflects an unrepeatable combination of climate, soil, weather and flowers. Each state has unique honey varietals that beekeepers can market to their customers. Please identify one unique varietal to your state and discuss the flower’s uniqueness and how beekeepers can effectively market that varietal. In your essay, please include a photo of the varietal’s flower, an interview with a local beekeeper who collects this varietal and a recipe that highlights the varietal.
