Grandfather Mountain

Join us for a fun-filled day as we explore one of North Carolina’s natural attractions. There are nature walks, hiking trails, wildlife habitats and the Mile-High Swinging Bridge. Be sure to dress accordingly & wear comfortable shoes (NO flip-flops or sandals). We would suggest bringing a light jacket, as you can’t ever be sure what the weather will be like when you are a mile in the sky. Lunch & snacks will be provided. We will meet at the County Office Building Parking Lot (90 South Main Street). Registration Deadline: May 29th.

4-H Investigates


June 16 - 18 ~ 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Ages: Grades 6 - 8
Cost: $30 ~ Limit: 6


Who killed Henry Ward? Participants will become detectives and determine who killed Henry Ward in a hit-and-run car accident almost 100 years ago. To solve this crime, you will utilize various techniques including blood typing, forensic anthropology, fingerprint analysis, impression analysis for tires and shoes, hair analysis, blood spatter and DNA evidence. Join us as we travel to East Wilkes Middle School to learn about forensic science and play the role of a CSI detective! Space is limited and preference will be given to youth who have not participated previously. (Parents, be advised that field trips will include the Surry County Jail, a funeral home and the Elkin Animal Diagnostics Lab.) Transportation, lunch and snacks are provided. We will meet at the County Office Building (90 S. Main St.) parking lot each morning at 8am. Registration Deadline: Wednesday, May 27th.

3 - 6 pm @ the Alleghany Memorial Hospital Lawn


Alleghany Memorial Hospital and the Wellness Center will be having a health fair on hospital grounds and will include health services information, lab work for adults, as well as tons of fun activities for the kids. Everything is free except for lab services. There will be snow cones, bounce house, jump rope, climbing wall, train rides, live music, and a FireHouse to learn about fire safety and calling 911 for help. The helicopter will also be on site. Bring the whole family and enjoy a fun afternoon to learn about health care services from our local hospital.

NC OMK Amazing Drama Experience Camp


Who: Military youth ages 12 to 16 who are interested in the Performing Arts (vocal, dance, drama, staging, etc.) are encouraged to apply. This week will be fun and exciting not to mention educational. Come meet and work with fellow artist during this exciting event!

When: June 29 - July 3, 2009

Where: Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina.

This camp will provide hands-on workshops, panel discussions, distinguished speakers and small group dialogues will help you take a closer look at every aspect of creative work to plan, produce and perform in a small stage show. Experienced directors and producers will instruct participants in hands-on sessions to improve stage and staging skills throughout the week. Working in small groups, participants will plan, prepare and present a show on the final day of the event, to which parents, guardians, and other special guests will be invited.

WC District Activity Day

– The location of West Central District Activity Day has changed. It will be held at Grandview Middle School. The school is located at 451 Catawba Valley Blvd SE in Hickory.

Categories: There are over 35 categores you can present in. A few of these include: Bugs and Bees, Small and Companion Animals, Horse, Wheels and Engines, Safety, Science and Technology, Soil, Water and the Environment, 21st Century Communication, Interior Design and Home Space, Forestry and Wildlife, Egg Cookery, Health and Fitness, Citizenship, 4-H Entertains and an Open Class. Cloverbud Presentations (ages 5-8) – I hope everyone is aware that we are allowing cloverbuds to attend District Activity Day and give their presentations. Another district has tried this as a way to encourage and build some future presenters and we have received approval to allow it to be part of the WC district event this year. I hope it will be a positive experience for your younger 4-H’ers.


We have spots to send 4 Cloverbuds (ages 5-8)These presentations should be no longer than 5 minutes and they may be on any topic, but no live animals.


Lunch – Lunch will be $5 and will be choice of a grilled hamburger or hotdog plate.

County Activity Day



Do you have something exciting that you like to talk about? Then come out and present at County Activity Day on Monday, May 11th at 6:00 p.m. at the County Office Building, 90 S. Main St. If you are interested in giving a presentation at the county or district level, here is your opportunity. Your presentation can be on any topic you choose. The competition is open to age 5-19. Cloverbuds will not be judged on a competitive level however, they may have an opportunity to move to the district level.
