Livestock Judging Clinic

Who: Youth ages 9-18
What: Educational clinic for youth interested in participating in livestock judging events. For all experience levels from beginners to experts. We will break the kids into groups depending on experience levels. Additionally, we will have a practice contest where kids can learn about

Cost: $10 per kid (Includes lunch and handouts)
Instructors: We will have a variety of instructors who are experts in their fields to
help teach this event, including past NC 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Team Members

Livestock Opportunities

There are a few opportunities for youth that are interested in learning more about showing and judging livestock.

On March 1, 2014 at the East Carolina Ag & Education Center in Rocky Mount, NC there is a Dairy Goat Fitting and Showing Clinic being offered.  For more information on how to register, click here.  The entry deadline is February 21, 2014.

The 2014 Eastern North Carolina 4-H Livestock School will be held on March 1 & 2, 2014 at the East Carolina Ag & Education Center in Rocky Mount, NC. Click here for more information.  The entry deadline is Friday, February 21, 2014.

On March 22, 2014 at the Mountain State Fairgrounds in Fletcher, a Livestock Judging Clinic will be held.  For more information about the clinic, click here.  The entry deadline is Friday, March 7, 2014.

Area Food Show

FOOD SHOW REGISTRATION

It’s time to show off all your culinary skills at the upcoming Area Food Show! This will be held on March 1 at East Wilkes Middle School and is open to youth ages 5 and up. There are three age categories to participate in: Cloverbud (ages 5-8), Junior (9-13), and Senior (14-18).

Categories include snack/appetizer, main dish, vegetable/soup/salad
and desserts.

Don’t miss out on this awesome opportunity to show off your “best dish”, participate in some great 4-H activities and meet new friends.

3rd Annual 4-H Ski and Snowboard Trip

It's not too late to sign up for the 3rd Annual Ski and Snowboard Trip. We will once again be taking a ski/snowboarding trip to French-Swiss Ski College at Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock on Friday, February 7th.  We will leave the County Office Building at 3:30 pm and return around 1 a.m.  The cost for skiing is $25 and $30 for snowboarding (this includes all equipment and lift ticket).  Clothing rental will be additional.

Spaces are limited so contact the office to register.  Deadline to register is January 31st.

Ages 8 and up.  Anyone under age 12 needs a parent or guardian present.

2014 Teen Retreat

The 2014 North Central Teen Retreat will be held on March 22-23 at the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center.  This is a leadership building retreat that offers workshops centered around the state 4-H project.   This year's community service activities will be based on our "Revolution of Responsibility" initiative.  We will also be electing our incoming District Officers for 2014/2015.  Teen Retreat is for youth who are between the ages of 13-18.  You must be 13 as of January 1, 2014.

The deadline to register is Monday, March 3, 2014.

2014-2015 District Officers

Are you a natural leader? Have you ever thought you would like to run for an office? Then District Officer may be the position for you. This position is very important and is responsible for planning various District Activities within the North Central District and also helping to plan state events.

You must be at least 14 years old, be an active member in 4-H and have been in 4-H for more than 2 years. This is an exciting opportunity. If you want to run, click here for the Intent forms.  These forms must be signed by Amy and have to be postmarked by February 17^th.  

**These positions need to be considered carefully and are a commitment not only by youth, but also the parents.  If you are unable to fulfill your duties you are not only affecting yourself, but also the other district officers and 4-Hers within your district.   If you have questions about responsibilities, please contact Amy for more information.

2014 4-H Scholarships

Scholarship information is here!!!  The applications must be reviewed and signed by me before they are forwarded to the State 4-H Office. Please click on the links below for more information.

Scholarships are open to 4-H members in North Carolina who will be registered as a full-time student. Recipients awarded NC 4-H Academic Scholarships will have an outstanding record of 4-H participation and achievement. Additionally, recipients will possess an excellent high school record of academic achievement measured chiefly by their performance on solid secondary school courses including English, mathematics, physical sciences and social sciences. Also, recipients will demonstrate an aptitude for college work which will be measured by their performance on college entrance examinations including the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT).

Girls in Science summer camp in the Smokies

Girls interested in science have an opportunity to spend a week this summer in Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the Great Smoky Mountain Institute at Tremont.  

• expanded this year to two one-week sessions (6 days and 5 nights)
• ages expanded to include girls ages 12-15
• cost is a sliding scale from $100 - $608
• Sessions are June 9 -14, 2014 or July 28 - August 2, 2014

The camp will include outdoor exploration throughout the park and participation in citizen science projects alongside real scientists and park rangers, with a goal of keeping girls excited about science as they move through their middle school years. Highlights of past Girls In Science Camps include snail studies in a temperate rainforest, evenings spent investigating insects in Cades Cove, and mornings working with specialists capturing and banding songbirds.
