National 4-H Week

October 7-13 is National 4-H Week, and Alleghany County is celebrating the 4-H youth who have made an impact on the community, and are stepping up to the challenges of a complex and changing world.

Recent findings from Tufts University's 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development indicate that young people in 4-H are three times more likely to contribute to their communities than youth not participating in 4-H. Notably, the Tufts research discovered that the structured learning, encouragement and adult mentoring that 4-H'ers receive play a vital role in helping them actively contribute to their communities.

4-H youth are a living breathing, culture-changing revolution for doing the right thing, breaking through obstacles and pushing our country forward by making a measurable difference right where they live. Learn how you can Join the Revolution of Responsibility at 4-H.org/revolution, or contact Amy Lucas at Alleghany Cooperative Extension at 336-372-5597 or amy_lucas@ncsu.edu

Community Service Opportunity for our Soldiers

THIS IS A SERVICE PROJECT THAT OUR CONGRESS DELEGATION WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN NEXT WEEK.  I APOLOGIZE FOR THE EXTREMELY SHORT NOTICE BUT WAS JUST MADE AWARE OF THE OPPORTUNITY THIS MORNING.  IF YOU HAVE EITHER TOWELS OR TWIN SHEETS YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO DONATE PLEASE BRING THEM TO THE EXTENSION OFFICE (90 S MAIN ST, SPARTA) EVEN IF THIS IS AFTER MONDAY.  WE WILL GET THEM TO THE SOLDIERS.

Approximately 350 single soldiers will be returning home to live in the barracks at Fort Bragg in mid August.
Once they arrive, they receive a no driving period to adjust from their deployment and will not be able to purchase anything they need.

We are asking our NC 4-H Family to assist us with providing at least one bath towel and one twin sheet (fitted or flat). These items are basic necessities that are not provided and would make their welcome home that much better.

Sarah Kotzian has agreed for us to collect at Congress during registration and on Wednesday morning before Hands To Service assembly.

SGT. Angie Bibin, Battalion Family Readiness Liaison from Ft. Bragg, Moore County 4-H’ers, and a 4-H volunteer/alumni will assist with your donation.

Please help us support our military and bring a sheet and towel for our soldiers.

Citizenship Focus 2012

A member of Alleghany County 4-H recently attended 4-H Citizenship North Carolina Focus, which was held in Raleigh, North Carolina. More than 200 youth and adults representing over 75 4-H programs across the state gathered to exchange ideas, gain knowledge and learn through hands on experiences about the different levels and branches of government.

Khalil Lawson represented Alleghany County at the June 11-13 conference. Through various conference sessions and facilitated discussions, delegates learned and shared information related to local, state and national government as well participated in budget simulation sessions and learned how to be active in the area of citizenship.  Delegates also worked with their county 4-H Agent to develop an action plan based on a local need in their community to implement upon returning home from the conference.

The highlight of the conference was the Legislative Breakfast where delegates had a chance to meet and have photos taken with their elected officials.  Following the breakfast, delegates traveled to the Legislative Building in Raleigh to meet with their elected officials and their staff.

4-H Citizenship North Carolina Focus is sponsored by North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives – Touchstone Energy.  North Carolina 4-H is Cooperative Extension’s youth development program.

For more information on this event or other 4-H programs, please contact Amy Lucas, 4-H Agent in Alleghany County at (336) 372-5597.
