Outbound Exchange Opportunities

Below are the 2011 Outbound Exchange Opportunities. There is a very quick turn around so if you are interested contact the office ASAP. The exciting opportunities include travel to Japan, Argentina, Costa Rica, Australia or Finland, or you can host an Exchange student from another country. North Carolina 4-H offers you some fantastic opportunities through the 4-H International Exchange Program. For more information and forms click HERE or contact the Extension Office at 336-372-5597. Deadline for Outbound Exchange Opportunities is January 17, 2010.
Ages are as of date of travel.
Japan for 8 weeks (includes 4 weeks of language school) recommended age 15 to 18. Approximately $4900.00. Departure June 9- Return August 4
Japan for 4 weeks. Ages 15 to 18 if never hosted. Ages 13 to 18 if hosted. Approximately $3900.00. Departure July 6, Return August 4
Australia for 4 weeks. Ages 16 to 19. Youth will stay on a sheep or dairy farm. Approximately $5000.00. Departure June 15, Return July 14
Costa Rica for 4 weeks. Ages 15 to 18. Approximately $2,900.00.
Departure June 18, Return July 16
Finland for 4 weeks, Ages 15 to 19. Approximately $3600.00. Departure June 25, Return July 27.
Argentina for 4 weeks. Ages 15 to 19, only seven delegates will be selected to travel from the United states as this is a pilot program. Approximately $3900.00. Departure July 7, Return August 7 .

Military Care Packages

We will again be sending care packages to the military personnel of the North Carolina National Guard stationed in Afghanistan. To see what can and cannot be shipped, check out this LINK for the Wish List Items for Solider Care Packages. Link to wish list is at the bottom of the page
If you would like to mail the care packages yourself, we have been informed if you use "If it Fits, it Ships" process there is no charge for shipping. Most USPS offices will ship to an APO/FPO address at no charge.
If you would prefer that we handle shipping, please drop off your care packages by December 15 at the Alleghany Extension Office (90 S. Main St, 3rd floor). North Carolina 4-H is proud to support the more than 123,622 active duty, reserve

4-H Scholarships and Honor Club Applications

Scholarship and Honor Club applications are due to the Extension Office by January 12th at 5pm. The applications must be reviewed and signed by me before they are forwarded to the State 4-H Office. Please click on the links below for more information on each.
Scholarships are open to 4-H members in North Carolina who will be registered as a full-time student.Recipients awarded NC 4-H Academic Scholarships will have an outstanding record of 4-H participation and achievement. Additionally, recipients will possess an excellent high school record of academic achievement measured chiefly by their performance on solid secondary school courses including English, mathematics, physical sciences and social sciences. Also, recipients will demonstrate an aptitude for college work which will be measured by their performance on college entrance examinations including the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT).

Membership in the North Carolina 4-H Honor Club is bestowed upon those 4-H’ers who have exhibited outstanding 4-H citizenship and leadership throughout their 4-H career. West Central District Teen Lock-In

The West Central District officers would like to invite 4-H teens from across the West Central District to a lock-in!
When: Friday, January 14-Saturday, January 15, 2011
Where: Catawba County Cooperative Extension Center
Time: Registration will begin at 6:30 pm, with activities beginning at 7:00. We will adjourn by 7:00 am on Saturday morning.
Cost: $15 (Includes supper, cosmic bowling and snacks)
We will be doing activities/workshops related to the statewide Hunger initiative.
We will be leaving the County Office Building at 5pm on Friday and will return by 9 am on Saturday morning. For more information or to register contact the Extension Office by Monday, January 3rd .You can reach the Extension office by calling (336) 372-5597.

Thanks to our Veterans

Veterans day comes only one time a year but honoring our veterans can be a daily act. Alleghany 4-H would like to send out a sincere thank you to all our veterans who have served to protect our country and our freedom. We encourage everyone to take time to thank a veteran and show your appreciation for all they have done and the sacrafices they have made serving our country.
