4-H Summer Fun.... Zoo Snooze: "Scutes, Scales & Slippery Skin"

We will be traveling to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro for a special program on Reptiles. We will be spending the night in the zoo and then touring the zoo on Saturday. Snacks, lunch and transportation are provided. We will be leaving on Friday from the County Office Building Parking lot at 4:00 p.m.

Registration deadline: Friday, July 18th.

4-H Summer Fun.... SciWorks


July 28

Join us for an adventure to SciWorks in Winston-Salem. We will get to view many exhibits such as the Mountain to the Sea and walk through the Environmental Park to view habitats of river otters, deer, and much more! Lunch and snacks will be provided. We will meet at the County Office Building Parking Lot (90 South Main Street). Adult chaperones may be needed for this event.

You MUST come to the Extension Office to register. If there is a fee, payment is due at the time of registration, to secure your child’s space. Parents must complete needed paperwork at registration, including a medical release, code of conduct, and media release.

4-H Summer Fun....Chef & Child

Do you like to cook? Come out and join us for a week-long series where you will learn about nutrition, safety and food preparation. We will also visit a local grocery store and restaurant for a behind-the-scenes tour. We will meet at the Alleghany County High School Family & Consumer Education Classroom. Space is limited and preference will be given to youth who have not participated previously.

You MUST come to the Extension Office to register. Parents must complete needed paperwork at registration, including a medical release, code of conduct, and media release.

4-H Summer Fun.... Wet 'N' Wild Emerald Pointe


June 26
8 am – 5 pm
Ages: 14-19

Come out and enjoy a day of fun in the sun! That morning we will begin with a short workshop on water and sun safety. Then, the rest of the day will be spent enjoying the water park. Transportation, lunch, along with your ticket into the amusement park, will be provided. You will need additional money for any additional drinks/snacks you may want while in the park and for any souveniers you may wish to purchase. We will meet at the County Office Building Parking Lot (90 South Main Street). Please be sure to bring your bathing suit and a change of clothes, as well as, a towel and sunscreen.

4-H Summer Fun.... Parkway Exploration

Come with us as we explore the scenic by-way. Did you know that construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began in Alleghany County in 1935? Join us as we stop off at some great points of interest such as Cumberland Knob (milepost 217), a picnic lunch at Little Glade Pond (milepost 230) and finish off the day at Stone Mountain State Park (milepost 229). Who knows what else we might see along the way. We will be discussing local flora and fauna as we explore. Please bring a bag lunch. A camera or binoculars may also come in handy!!

4-H Summer Fun.... Barter Theatre / Hungry Mother Park

We will travel to Barter Theater in Abingdon, VA to watch the play, “Sleeping Beauty”. When an angry fairy curses Princess Aurora at her christening, all seems lost. Only the skill of the good fairies and the love of a certain prince can change the curse to a blessing. Bursting with magic, mystery and romance, this play is sure to delight the dreamer in us all. After the play, we will travel to Hungry Mother State Park to enjoy an afternoon of swimming. Lunch and snacks will be provided. We will meet at the County Office Building Parking Lot (90 South Main Street). Please bring your swimsuit, towel and sunscreen! Adult chaperones may be needed for this event.

We will travel to a local fishing pond and spend the morning fishing. Try your luck casting and see if you can catch the “big one”! We will meet at the County Office Building Parking Lot (90 South Main Street). Poles and bait will be provided.

June 11th

Have you ever wondered what the smallest or largest raptor is or why owls can hear so well? Then come with us on an adventure to the Carolina Raptor Center where we will learn about the many birds of prey. Be prepared to explore the world of hawks, owls, falcons and eagles. Lunch and transportation will be provided. You may want to bring additional money for the gift shop. We will meet at the County Office Building Parking Lot (90 South Main Street). Adult chaperones may be needed for this event.
