Food Show

Do you have a favorite dish you like to prepare?  Then come show off your culinary skill at the area food show.   Pick from your favorite category - Dessert, Main Dish, Vegetable/Salad/Soup or Snack/Appetizer. There are three age divisions: Cloverbuds 5-8, Juniors 9-13 and Seniors 14-18. Be sure you are prepared to answer questions about your dish and be ready to serve up a “helping” to the judges.

We will be dishing out plenty of food and fun activities too.  If you have questions, contact the 4-H office at (336) 372-5597 and ask for Amy or Michele. Registration forms are due to the Extension Office by February 16, 2012. Food show will be held February 25th at East Wilkes Middle School.  Transportation will be provided.

Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP)


Who:  High school juniors and seniors
When:  June 24-July 20    DEADLINE TO APPLY - February 28
Where:  School of Agriculture and Environmental Science, NC A&T State University


RAP applications are now being accepted through February 28th for a rewarding, hands-on residential program in science research for high school juniors and seniors.

From June 24th- July 20th RAP students will live on campus and work under the direction of top research scientists at NC A&T to produce an independent research project.  Students accepted into the program will be compensated financially.

Institute for Future Agricultural Leader (IFAL)

NC A&T is  recruiting outstanding students for the upcoming Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders (IFAL) to be held at North Carolina A&T State University the week of June 10–15, 2012.  The IFAL program is a one-week residential program designed for rising high-school seniors sponsored by the North Carolina Farm Bureau.  Students are exposed to the academic and research programs in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and are introduced to careers in the food, agricultural, and environmental sciences.  In addition, students will gain experiences in leadership by participating in leadership training seminars, touring the N.C. General Assembly, meeting governmental officials, and visiting the N.C. Farm Bureau Offices.

Aquatic Sciences Day Camp


NC State University is offering a hands-on learning opportunity for students to explore a variety of potential fields, including aquatic ecology, fish biology, aquaculture, conservation biology, veterinary medicine, fisheries management, and other related fields

Summer Ventures

Here is a great STEM opportunity for teen 4-H'ers (rising juniors & seniors) to attend a FREE 4-week STEM summer program at one of four NC Universities (ASU, UNC, NCCU & ECU). *Home-School youth are encouraged to apply. Applications are due at the end of the month (Jan. 31st).

Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented North Carolina residents who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics. The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for intensive study.

A statewide program of the University of North Carolina system, SVSM is administered by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Four campuses of the university system host the SVSM institutes, each of which has its own director. 

Agricultural Technician Program


Quality Equipment, LLC, is a new ANA member and a John Deere equipment dealer. They strongly support agritourism and hope to become actively involved in future events, especially in the Piedmont and Coastal regions of the state. Right now, they are recruiting students to take part in an exciting Agricultural Technician Program where applicants have an opportunity to “earn while they learn“ a great career.  The best part is, participants can be guaranteed a JOB, at one of 12 locations, when they excel and complete a two year program at Wake Technical College.  This could be a real win/win situation, so please pass this opportunity along to anyone, of any age, who might be interested.

*NC Meat Goat Association Annual Wether & Doe Sale*
When: January 14, 11:00 am
Where: Johnston County Livestock Arena, Smithfield NC
Who:  20-25 wether and doe kids will be offered for sale.  These goats will be the desirable age and size for spring shows.

*NC Junior Hereford Association Judging in January*
When: January 28
Where: NCSU Beef Educational Unit

*Billy Nance Family 4-H Meat Goat Leadership Institute*

Where:  NCSU Beef Educational Unit
Who: Youth ages 14-19 and currently enrolled in High School Entry Forms:

Perry & Doris Teeter Beef Leadership Institute


When: February 17-19, 2012
Where: Hickory, NC. This event is held in conjunction with the NC Cattlemen's Conference and the kids will spend time at this event as well.
Who: Youth ages 14-19 and currently enrolled in High School

This is a great opportunity for youth that have a sincere interest in the Beef Industry. Youth learn about the Beef Industry while also learning leadership skills, public speaking, etiquette, and setting goals.
