NC OMK Amazing Drama Experience Camp

Who: Military youth ages 12 to 16 who are interested in the Performing Arts (vocal, dance, drama, staging, etc.) are encouraged to apply. This week will be fun and exciting not to mention educational. Come meet and work with fellow artist during this exciting event!

When: June 29 - July 3, 2009

Where: Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina.

This camp will provide hands-on workshops, panel discussions, distinguished speakers and small group dialogues will help you take a closer look at every aspect of creative work to plan, produce and perform in a small stage show. Experienced directors and producers will instruct participants in hands-on sessions to improve stage and staging skills throughout the week. Working in small groups, participants will plan, prepare and present a show on the final day of the event, to which parents, guardians, and other special guests will be invited.

WC District Activity Day

Date: June 24, 2009 (Wednesday)

– The location of West Central District Activity Day has changed. It will be held at Grandview Middle School. The school is located at 451 Catawba Valley Blvd SE in Hickory.

Categories: There are over 35 categores you can present in. A few of these include: Bugs and Bees, Small and Companion Animals, Horse, Wheels and Engines, Safety, Science and Technology, Soil, Water and the Environment, 21st Century Communication, Interior Design and Home Space, Forestry and Wildlife, Egg Cookery, Health and Fitness, Citizenship, 4-H Entertains and an Open Class. Cloverbud Presentations (ages 5-8) – I hope everyone is aware that we are allowing cloverbuds to attend District Activity Day and give their presentations. Another district has tried this as a way to encourage and build some future presenters and we have received approval to allow it to be part of the WC district event this year. I hope it will be a positive experience for your younger 4-H’ers.

We have spots to send 4 Cloverbuds (ages 5-8)These presentations should be no longer than 5 minutes and they may be on any topic, but no live animals.

Lunch – Lunch will be $5 and will be choice of a grilled hamburger or hotdog plate.

County Activity Day

Do you have something exciting that you like to talk about? Then come out and present at County Activity Day on Monday, May 11th at 6:00 p.m. at the County Office Building, 90 S. Main St. If you are interested in giving a presentation at the county or district level, here is your opportunity. Your presentation can be on any topic you choose. The competition is open to age 5-19. Cloverbuds will not be judged on a competitive level however, they may have an opportunity to move to the district level. Do you love animals? Then come join us for an exciting day and learn how to prepare & handle animals for livestock shows. You need to wear hard shoes and no sandals permitted. RC Car Race

During the intermission of the 2009 Carquest Spring Mowdown Lawnmower Race on Saturday, May 9th there will be a RC(remote control) Car Race. If you are a student in grades 6-8 or an adult and would like to participate in the race, click here for your entry form. Entry forms are due to Joe Whisnant or to the Extension Office by Thursday, May 7th.

There is also a raffle taking place. If you would like a chance to win a RC Car (valued at $200) stop by Carquest in Sparta to enter. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each or 6 for $5.

Show off your photographic talents in the Alleghany County 4-H Photo Contest with the theme “4-H Centennial”. All entries are due to the Extension Office by Friday, May 15 by 5 p.m. Junior and Senior entries in some categories may be eligible for competition at the state level. Miss America gives credit to 4-H

Ask Katie Stam about her passion for community service, and she'll tell you it all started with 4-H. Long before winning her title as Miss America, Katie Stam from Seymour, Ind. would spend hours in 4-H performing in creative dramatics, competing at the Jackson County fair, and visiting with 4-H friends and family. It was there that she learned the values of leadership, mentorship, and community service. And like most 4-H kids, she collected blue ribbons and trophies along the way to mark her accomplishments.

In January the Indiana farm girl was crowned Miss America 2009 and now that she's in the national spotlight, Stam is getting the message out that community service is important and rewarding. Stam's platform, Promoting Community Service and Involvement, aims to get youth involved in their own neighborhoods.

With community service as her national platform, Stam could potentially transform the way millions of young people think about giving back to their communities and 4-H. "4-H is such an advocate for community service," says Stam. "It encourages you to reach out to people in so many different ways."

She is also the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network and is the official spokesperson for Zerosmoke.Stam is currently being considered for Time Magazine's annual 100 Most Influential People List. The annual list asks the public to rate each candidate on their influence on the world. Those recognized fall in one of five categories: Leaders & Revolutionaries, Builders & Titans, Artists & Entertainers, Scientists & Thinkers, and Heroes & Icons. Within each category, the 20 most influential people are selected, for a grand total of 100 each year.
