4-H State Council Conference

Who: Any boy or girl 13 years of age or older as of January 1 who is participating in the 4-H program is eligible to attend State 4-H Council Conference
 
When: Saturday, September 6 – Sunday, September 7, 2014

Where: McKimmon Center, State Fairgrounds, Carter Finley Football Stadium
 
What Does It Cost? 
Full Time Registration (includes Facility, Insurance, Saturday Dance, Workshops, CALS Tailgate Ticket, Football Game Ticket, Sunday Lunch and  Lodging): $155

Take the Bait

2014 Dairy Poster Contest

The theme for the 2014 Dairy Poster Contest is "Dairy Packs Power ". Youth should incorporate this theme into their posters. You can see the June Dairy theme and logo here. 

Please note the following rules:

1. Competition in this contest will be conducted on an individual basis in Division I (9-12 years of age), Division II (13-15 years of age), and Division III (16-19 years of age) at the county and state level. Youth in Division IV (5-8 years of age) will participate on a non-competitive basis at the county level only.

2. Posters should be a standard 22" X 28" size.

3. Posters MUST NOT contain copyright material such as cartoon characters, etc.



All posters at the state competition in Division I, II, and III will be displayed in a prominent place during the dairy shows in the Jim Graham Building at the NC State Fair.
The following awards will be provided to state winners in Division I, Division II, and Division III by the Southeastern United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA):

• First Place: $100 cash
• Second Place: $75 cash
• Third Place: $50 cash

NOTE: Each poster must have the DAIRY POSTER CONTEST SCORE CARD, with the top portion completely filled out, taped to the back side of the poster.

4-H Investigates

July 9-11 
Ages: Rising 6th - 8th graders 
Cost: $35  ~ Limit: 5 
8:30 am - 4:30 pm each day 

Who killed Henry Ward? Participants will become detectives and determine who killed Henry Ward in a hit-and-run car accident almost 100 years ago. To solve this crime, you will utilize various techniques including blood typing, forensic anthropology, fingerprint analysis, impression analysis for tires and shoes, hair analysis, blood spatter and DNA evidence. Join us as we travel to East Wilkes Middle School to learn about forensic science and play the role of a CSI detective! Space is limited and preference will be given to youth who have not participated previously. Transportation, lunch and snacks are provided. We will meet at the County
Office Building (90 S. Main St.) parking lot each morning at 8:30 am.

**Parents, please be advised that field trips will include the Surry County Courthouse, a funeral home
and/or a hospital morgue**

Greensboro Science Center

When:   Tuesday June 17th    
(8:30 am - 5 pm)
Who:  Ages:  8+
Cost:   $20

Go with us to visit the Greensboro Science Center!  We will tour the museum, zoo and the North Carolina’s only inland aquarium.  We will see African penguins, sharks, otters, stingrays and turtles. Join us for a great day of learning and fun.  

Lunch, transportation and snacks provided.  We will meet at the County Office Building Parking Lot.

NC 4-H Youth Voice

When:  August 15-16, 2014
Where:  Buncombe County
Who:  4-Her's ages 14-18
Deadline:  June 27th
Cost:  FREE 

We are excited to be partnering again with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) for the 5th year to host a Youth Summit! Youth Voice will be held in Buncombe County. One youth (ages 14-18) per county as well as lead adults are invited to attend this event. During the conference, youth participants will have the chance to select real problems happening in counties across the state to help provide a  solution for.  Local county employees and County Commissioners will mentor the delegates and Saturday afternoon, youth will have a chance to put their knowledge to work through an interactive session with  Commissioners.

Only one youth per county will be eligible to attend.

2014 SUMMER FUN


The 2014 Alleghany 4-H Summer Fun Newsletter is now available online.  CLICK HERE to find out what fun & exciting activities we have planned for this year.

In order to sign up for any of these activities, you MUST com in person (to the Extension Office) to register.  It is strongly suggested that you sign up early, as there are a limited number of spaces available.

If there is a fee for the event, payment is due in full at time of registration.  There is also a one-time registration fee of $10, which includes a t-shirt.

We MUST have updated (2014) Enrollment, Medical & Media Release forms signed.  You can print them to fill out or we have them available in the office.
