Food Show

Do you have a favorite dish you like to prepare? Then come show off your culinary skill at the area food show. Pick from your favorite category - Dessert, Main Dish, Vegetable/Salad/Soup or Snack/Appetizer. There are three age divisions: Cloverbuds 5-8, Juniors 9-13 and Seniors 14-18. Be sure you are prepared to answer questions about your dish and be ready to serve up a “helping” to the judges.

We will be dishing out plenty of food and fun activities too. If you have questions, contact the 4-H office at (336) 372-5597 and ask for Amy or Michele. Registration forms are due to the Extension Office by February 16, 2012. Food show will be held February 25^th at East Wilkes Middle School. Transportation will be provided.

RAP applications are now being accepted through February 28th for a rewarding, hands-on residential program in science research for high school juniors and seniors.

From June 24th- July 20th RAP students will live on campus and work under the direction of top research scientists at NC A&T to produce an independent research project. Students accepted into the program will be compensated financially.

Institute for Future Agricultural Leader (IFAL)

Comet Lovejoy travels through the Sun

Some very interesting things are taking place in space this week. The most recent is a comet that has plunged into the sun and survived to come out on the other side. The temperature in the corona of the sun can reach over 2 million degrees Fahrenheit so it was expected for the icy comet to simply disintegrate. NASA has taken some impressive video and there are some great links to follow.

Membership in the North Carolina 4-H Honor Club is a great honor for 4-H’ers who have exhibited outstanding 4-H citizenship and leadership throughout their 4-H career. An Honor Club member continues to provide leadership and service to the total 4-H program throughout life.

In order to be eligible for membership, the applicant must have completed three or more years of 4-H club work and shall be at least 16 years of age and not more than 20 years of age on January 1 of the year of application.

It's time again for the West Central District Lock-in. This year it will be January 13-14, 2012 in Caldwell County. The lock-in is open to youth ages 13 - 18 (must be 13 as of January 1, 2012).
Cost for the event is $15.

You must register by Wednesday, January 4th at 5 pm.
We will be leaving at 4:00 pm from the County Extension Office on January 13 and will return by 12:00 pm on Saturday, January 14th.

Please bring $10 for dinner on the way to the lock-in.

This will be a great time to meet new 4-Hers and participate in some fun workshops.

Luke Hampton is a 17 year old Senior at Alleghany High School in Sparta, North Carolina. His parents are Randy and Benita Hampton. He broke his neck in a wrestling accident during a tournament on Saturday 12/3/11. He’s being transported to the Sheperd Spinal Trauma Facility in Atlanta, Georgia. In order to help the family with expenses some community members have joined together to sell Christmas wreaths.

Wreaths will be for sale for $10 and all proceeds will go to benefit Luke Hampton and family to cover expenses. You can also make donations at the State Employees Credit Union – account # 6100252 and is set up in Luke’s name. Wreaths will be available at the JV and Varsity Basketball games tonight and at the Wrestling tournament this Saturday 12/10 at AHS. Wreaths will also be for sale at 4 Brothers Country Junction, 21 Quick Stop, Glade Valley Country Store, CJ's Hardware and Alleghany Beauty Shop.

Crouse Park/Sparta Greenway Public Hearings

Please try to attend the Crouse Park/Sparta Greenway public hearings scheduled for October 25th at the Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation conference room, 1889 Hwy 21 South, Sparta, NC. This is an opportunity to hear from you about the proposed greenway and walk system that the Town of Sparta is working toward to provide fitness opportunity and improve the walkability of our town. There will be two morning meetings beginning at 10am and two afternoon meetings beginning at 5:30pm. The Comprehensive Greenway Master Plan will be presented at the first of both the morning and the evening meetings.

The Site Plan of Phase One will be presented at the second of both the morning and evening meetings. It is imperative for purposes of securing a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) Grant that we have a large turnout with lots of input from the public. We anticipate this proposed greenway and walk system will ultimately enhance the livability of our town and improve the health of our citizens.

To combat a national shortage of young people pursuing science college majors and occupations, the 4-H Science Fair ignites a spark of early youth interest in science and science careers. Currently, more than five million youth across the nation participate in 4-H science, engineering, technology and applied math year-long programming. Through the One Million New Scientists, One Million New Ideas campaign, 4-H is working toward a bold goal to engage one million new young people in science, engineering, technology and applied math programs by the year 2013.

Engaging youth in scientific exploration early on provides the necessary platform that they need to build a long-lasting interest in the field, and to make ongoing contributions to the sciences. Science is often an overwhelming and consequently overlooked subject for young people, but the 4-H Science Fair makes science exciting, accessible, and relevant. Youth will learn about science fair resources, how to construct a science fair exhibit and will be encouraged to continue their science exploration by applying what they’ve learned to their own science fair project.

Youth ages 9 to 18, parents and educators are invited to participate and compete in the 4th annual West Central District 4-H Science held on January 7, 2012 at the Catawba County Science Center in Hickory. Entry forms and a $5 registration fee are due by October 15, 2011. Prizes (1st place - $75, 2nd place - $50 and 3rd place - $25) will be awarded in three age divisions (9-10, 11-13 and 14-18) in four categories, life science, physical science, earth & environmental science and technology and engineering. 4-H Science Fair entry forms may be located at

Burke County Fair : Open Horse Show

The Burke County Fair will be holding an Open Horse Show on Saturday Oct. 15th at the Burke County Fairgrounds.

Show registration will begin at 10 a.m. and the show will start at 1 p.m. The show will take place during the fair so their will be plenty of concessions available.

All proceeds from this show benefit Burke County 4-H. This show is open to all ages and all NC residents.

The 24th annual Alleghany County Agricultural Fair starts tomorrow, August 22. Tomorrow we will be accepting entries into the Exhibition Building from 12 pm - 6 pm the the Emerson Black Building. There are both youth and adult categories with over 70 categories for youth and more than 400 categories for adults. This is when youth and adults can enter their favorite picture, prettiest flower, most unusual vegetable or best Lego construction for competition in our Exhibition Building.

We will also be having a horse show beginning at 6 pm. Come out an enjoy the fun.

Science Fair Workshop

There will be a science fair workshop on Monday, September 19, 2011 from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm in the 2nd floor conference room of the County Office Building (90 S. Main St.). April Dilllon, 4-H Agent in Lincoln County, will be the instructor. The workshop is open to youth, parents, volunteers and educators. You will learn about the science fair process and do several hands on-experiments. This workshop will give you all the tools you need to get started on a great project for the district science fair to be held in January.

Each applicant must be between the ages of 15 and 18 years old, and in good academic standing with their schools.

Alleghany 4-H’ers attend State 4-H Congress

4-H’ers from Alleghany County attended North Carolina 4-H Congress July 18-21st in Raleigh, North Carolina. Congress is the high point of the 4-H year, bringing young people from across the state to the North Carolina State University campus and Raleigh for four days of activity. More than 500 4-H’ers, volunteer leaders and North Carolina Cooperative Extension agents attended 4-H Congress.

4-H’ers who attended from Alleghany County included Bryanna Lindberg, Natasha Hamm and Arianne Hurtado. While at 4-H Congress, delegates were able to take part in activities such as presentations, workshops, and were also able to participate in a hands-to-service project benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bank. This year the 4-Her’s packaged over 42,000 pounds of rice and 3,500 pounds of pasta. Delegates also had the opportunity to tour the 4-H exhibit at the NC State Library and elect their incoming state officers.

All Alleghany 4-Her’s participated in state presentations. Bryanna received a silver medal in the public speaking category where her topic was Malaria while Natasha and Arianne received bronze medals for their team presentation on the Dirty Secrets of Blood Spatter in the Science and Technology category.

Come show off your presentation skills at the upcoming District Activity Day scheduled for June 22 in Davie County. Competition is open to youth ages 9-18. Presentations should be 5-12 minutes in length. The is also a cookery division and an Expressive Arts portion where you can showcase your talents. Cloverbuds ages 5-8 are also encouraged to participate, but they will not be judged on a competitive level. Top winners at the district level will be invited to present at the state level at NC4-H Congress in July. Depending on category, winners will receive cash prizes, medals and scholarships to attend Congress.

Horse Club Meeting

Dairy Quiz Bowl and Skillathon Contest.

Three Alleghany and Yadkin 4-H youth recently traveled to Iredell County to participate in the North Carolina 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and Skillathon Contest. The Alleghany/Yadkin team placed third in the state in the Senior Division Quiz Bowl portion. This is a state level competition with more than 75 participants. The North Carolina Farm to School Calendar Contest

Create artwork for the 2011-12 North Carolina Farm to School Calendar. Artwork should feature “Scenes of North Carolina Agriculture”.

FOURTEEN entries will be chosen to illustrate the calendar for the 2011-12 school year.

All North Carolina public school students in grades Kindergarten through Six are eligible to participate.

Entry Details

Students’ art work must be original. Creativity and lots of color are encouraged.

The calendar will highlight the diverse agriculture throughout the state. Artwork entered in the contest MUST include the theme “Scenes of North Carolina Agriculture”.

Markers, crayon, watercolor, ink, pencil, acrylic, tempera paint or colored pencils can be used. No 3-dimensional art, pastel, chalk, paint-by-numbers, commercial art kits or computer generated work.

SIZE: Entries must be 11 by 8.5 inches, HORIZONTAL pictures only.

Entries must be on white or light colored paper that will allow duplication, scanning and display. Do not use ruled notebook paper.

Entries must be flat. Do not fold, matte, mount, laminate or frame art. Use of cartoon characters, TV figures and logos is not acceptable.

An official entry blank or copy MUST be completed and securely taped to the back of each entry. Please do not staple or glue forms to artwork. Make sure entry form is filled out completely and that writing is legible. Only one entry per artist.

The Calendar

The winning art will be used for the cover and inside illustrations.

A minimum number of calendars will be sent to each school district before the start of the 2011-12 school year. Additional copies will be available through NCDA & CS on a first-come, first serve basis. Calendars will be available free of charge.

Awards

Each student who enters the contest will receive a personalized certificate of participation. Fourteen students will receive a $50 savings bond and their artwork will be featured in the 2011-12 NC Farm to School Calendar and on the Farm to School website

What is the Poultry Science Summer Institute?

The summer institute is a four-day, four-night conference designed to broaden the high school student’s understanding of the educational disciplines, scholarship opportunities, careers and industries related to poultry science.

Who can attend & how much is it?

Any high school student (rising 11th and 12th graders) with an interest in the biological sciences or a career in the poultry industry may apply to attend. You must list as a reference a high school science teacher, counselor, County Extension agent, 4H leader or vocational agriculture instructor.

Cost for the conference is only $50.00, which includes your lodging on campus, all meals, field trips, workshop materials, great goody bags and entertainment.

How do I apply?

Once you’ve decided to join us, just follow the simple steps below. There’s nothing to lose!
Fill out the registration form before the May 2nd deadline.
Complete a brief personal statement indicating why you are interested in the experience (this is very helpful when we are selecting who will be chosen to attend!).
Mail or fax your form to Melissa Scherpereel at the address on the bottom by May 2nd.
We will notify you of your acceptance by the second week of May.
Space is limited to 15 - 20 and this program is very popular. If you are not accepted the first time, please consider applying again next year.

What's in it for me?

You will get to see what campus life is really like at North Carolina State University when you come to the summer iInstitute. You will be staying in University Towers, a private residence hall (with a pool), going to local fun spots, doing hands-on-experimentation in a classroom setting, and doing all sorts of things that college students do. In other words, you'll get to "try us on for size". Students participating in the program will get to interact informally with numerous NC State Univ. faculty, staff and current poultry science students. Attendees will learn about the vast field that is Poultry Science as well as specific information on our Poultry Science Degree Program and areas such as:

What: Camp CHILL is a 1-week overnight camp experience focusing on healthy lifestyles through nutrition lessons, fun physical activities, team-building, and traditional camp programming. Fee includes follow-up reunion/assessment October 22nd for participant and one parent.

Who: Camp CHILL was created to target those students who are in the 85%-97% BMI range, placing them “at risk of obesity.” Campers must be rising 6th through 9th graders as of August 1, 2011.

Horse Club Meeting

4-H AIRE (Application, Interview, Resume & Essay)

AIRE is an opportunity for older youth to prepare for filling out college applications, making a resume, and having job interviews.

AIRE also known as Application, Interview, Resume & Essay is a 4-step process by which youth are chosen to attend National events such as National Congress, National Conference, and International Leadership Conference.

Any youth ages 14-18 can participate. Age is determined by age as of January 1 of the current year. Youth are chosen from this program to attend National 4-H Congress, National 4-H Conference and International Leadership Conference. You must complete an application and submit a resume of no more than two pages. An essay of 500 words or less is also required. Essays can be on any topic that relates to you. Applications, Essay and Resume’s are due to the Extension Office by Wednesday, May 11th. The Interview portion of AIRE is conducted at NC 4-H Congress in Raleigh in July. Citizenship North Carolina Focus: A Capital Experience

4-H Citizenship North Carolina Focus will be held June 13-15, 2011 in Raleigh at the Sheraton Downtown. This is open to two (2) 4-Hers from Alleghany County, ages 14-19. Participants will participate in hands-on workshops, panel discussions, distinguished speakers, and open discussion will help you discover how government impacts your everyday life, and how you can impact government in return. You will learn about state government, learn about working with public officials, hear from prominent North Carolina officials, and visit legislators.

Applications must be received in our office by Friday, April 29 2011!!

Cost for the event is $125 (scholarships may be available).

Horse Creative Writing Contests

The goals of the Horse Creative Writing Events are to provide an outlet for written expression for the 4-H member in horse related topics while encouraging youth to express their experiences and ideas in a creative manner. Furthermore, the Creative Writing Contests will recognize youth who have creative writing talent by expressing their ideas through writing.
Eligibility
Each participant must be a current 4-H club member. Participants do not need to own their own horse. The contest will consist of a Junior and Senior Division. Youths who have reached age 14 but have not reached age 19 as of January 1 are considered Seniors. Junior individuals must not have reached age 14 as of January 1. Cloverbuds are not eligible.
Registration
Separate entry fee checks are required for each event, or the check and entry will be returned. (For example, a youth entering a poem, essay, and short story must submit three separate checks made payable to N.C. State University to cover the entry fee for the event). The entry form must be completed and submitted with a postmark dated prior to the registration deadline. Each creative writing submission must be submitted in quadruplicate as previously noted.

We are reaching out and asking for your help and support. We have just received a very troubling e-mail concerning next weeks legislative discussion of the Higher Education Budget. There are now being discussions held of cutting CES in the range of 25% - 30% which could result in cuts of 300-400 positions. This is dramatically higher than what was originally expected. This cut would be felt through all departments of CES. As said by Dr. Joe Zublena, Associate Dean and Director, this would be devastating to our abilities to meet the current and future needs of our citizens. In 2010 CES reported over 5.8 million contacts.

Horseless Day Camp - July 26
The Alleghany 4-H Horseless Day Camp will be held July 26, 2011 at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds located in Sparta. Participants will enjoy learning beginning horsemanship skills while having fun with other 4-H'ers. Each camper must supply his/her own transportation to and from the camp. Upon acceptance to camp, participants will receive a camp manual outlining the planned activities and rules.

Horse Camp - July 26-30
Horse Camp will held July 26-July 30, 2011 at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds in Sparta. The nonrefundable camp fee is $100.00 per camper. This fee and all forms are due by June 14th to hold your slot. Spaces are limited and will be filled based on the following application. Attendance for camp is open to youth that are certified North Carolina 4-H members. You will obtain all forms upon acceptance.

NCSU Military Appreciation Day Baseball Game

NCSU will host a “Military Appreciation Day” event during the NC State Wolfpack vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons baseball game. The event will be held Sunday, 3 April 2011 at 1:00 PM at Doak Field on the campus of NC State.

As part of the “Military Appreciation Day” event, fans with *Military ID
will receive free admission, courtesy of Wolfpack Athletics, in honor
and support of military service members, their families and their
children. Youth 17 and under get in FREE.

Military guests can purchase discounted tickets for $3 at the gate.

*Military ID is required to receive special ticket prices.

At the beginning of the game, 20 military youth will have the chance to
run out of the field with the Wolfpack players as they are announced.
Military youth ages 5 to 17 years of age are invited to participate.

Youth Market Turkey Show

We are less than one week away from our annual registration for the Youth Market Turkey Show. If you are interested in participating you will need to fill out the registration form and return to me no later than 5 pm on Monday, February 28th. Registration will begin at 5 am on Tuesday, March 1. I realize this is a very quick turnaround but information just came out today. Last year the 300 slots filled up in less than 13 hours so it is crucial this information get back to me ASAP.

A few changes from previous years . . .

Beginning this year, there will be a $10 per person (not bird) poultry youth activity fee for this event. We hope you will understand this change. We have never had a budget to run this program and we need to find a funding source for all that goes on behind the scenes here year round to make this program happen.

The“Poultry Activity Fee” will include registration for one youth, up to three turkey poults and 6 pounds of feed from the feed mill. Raleigh has wanted to provide some starter feed for years and could not figure out a way to do this. They can now use some of this fee to purchase and make a ton of feed at our own NC State Feed Mill. This feed will be exactly what these birds need for their first few days to first week of life. They will provide a 6 pound bag per participant (basically 2 pounds of feed per poult) that will help ensure these newly hatched poults have proper nutrition for their first few days. They are aware that some folks already have feed and know exactly what to do upon receipt of poults. However, there are a large number that are simply not ready for the birds at pick up and are scrambling to find feed and are even unsure of what to feed in the beginning. They hope this addition of feed will help both the poults and your family as you adjust to this new fee.

Payments can be made in advance of pick-up (recommended) and at pick-up. They can not give out poults to those that have NOT paid the youth activity fee. They have included an explanation of the Activity Fee in case there were questions. If there are any other questions or comments please include these on the back of your registration form.

Competition begins at 11:00 am. Registration is $20/team. There will be cash prizes for the top 3 winners: $100 - 1st place, $50 - 2nd place and $25 - 3rd place. Concessions will be available.

Host Families needed for Japanese Exchange Students

The NC 4-H International Exchange will be hosting 20 Japanese students and 2 chaperons this summer, Sunday, July 24 through Friday, August 19. (These are the pick-up and drop off dates for host families.) Families wishing to host a student from Japan should turn in applications to their County Extension Office by April 15th.

Please remember that all inbound month long students are required to stay with families that have a host sibling of the same gender, within 2 years of the same age, and have similar interests. The student must have their own bed, but it is not necessary to have their own room.

Host families are responsible for all meals, transportation to and from the designated pick-up and drop-off locations, supervision and other family activities. Students are responsible for all souvenirs. Health insurance is provided for the students. Money is available to pay for the student to attend camp with their host sibling.

We encourage families to conduct their normal activities but to make sure that the student is introduced to the community and the family. Families should take their student to the grocery store, have them visit the grandparents house if appropriate and close proximity, introduce them to neighbors and friends, go to 4-H meetings, take them to church if the family is a church goer etc... It is not required that the family plan special vacations.

29th Annual Fur, Fish 'N Game Rendezvous

A once in a lifetime outdoor learning experience for boys and girls ages 11 to 16!
Open to the first 85 registrants, the Beginning Fur, Fish ‘N Game Camp is designed to give participants a better understanding of our natural resources and how we interact with them.

Fur, Fish ‘N Game campers will have the opportunity to:
Gain Hunter Safety Certification while learning about firearm safety for the field and home.
Study wildlife and forests as renewable resources
Learn about fishing and aquatic biology
Study hunting as a viable wildlife management practice
Gain knowledge useful in formulating an environmental (outdoor) ethic
Practice outdoor recreation skills such as archery, riflery, canoeing, orienteering, and fishing
Other classes and activities include retriever training, swimming, snake identification, first aid, ropes course, birds of prey, and taxidermy

Advanced Fur, Fish ‘N Game Rendezvous Camp:

Open to the first fifteen (15) respondents, this action packed camp is for youth that have successfully completed the Beginning Fur, Fish ‘N Game Camp or have already obtained their Hunter Safety Certification. NC 4-H Horse Camp

The North Carolina 4-H Horsemanship Camp is held in June of each year at Millstone 4-H Center. This rustic camp is located in Richmond County near the town of Ellerbe.

Youth who attend Horsemanship Camp will improve horsemanship skills while having fun with other 4-H'ers. A highly qualified camp staff will introduce the beginning rider to the basics of horsemanship while advanced riders can learn additional horsemanship skills and showing techniques. Special features of the camp include educational lectures, riding lessons, trail rides and training demonstrations, in addition to traditional camp activities.

Instruction will be given in hunt seat and western disciplines. Should enough interest exist, instruction in Gaming, Dressage/Eventing, Non-Trotting and Saddle Seat will be offered. All campers must supply his/her own horse, equipment, feed, and transportation. The camp will provide bedding for the stalls.

Attendance is open to youth who are certified North Carolina 4-H members, are 9 to 19 years old, and have access to an acceptable horse. Each camper will be solely responsible for the care and feeding of his/her horse. Each camper must have a physical examination within one year before camp and be deemed able to complete the camp activities. No horseless campers will accepted. Camper numbers are limited and will be divided equally between hunt seat and western riders. These slots will be filled on a first-come basis depending on the camper and their horses' eligibility.

If accepted, campers must complete the horse health record with their veterinarian's assistance.This form, located in the camper's manual, states that the horse is free of disease and is in good health. Horses are required to have had a negative Coggins test for E.I.A. (Swamp Fever) dated April 1st or later of the current year. No exceptions will be made! Horses not fitting the riding program criteria or who exhibit lameness/behavioral problems will be sent home.

NOTE TO ALL CAMPERS- Camp Millstone cabins are undergoing renovation and will have PRIVATE BATHROOMS in each cabin, along with AIR CONDITIONING!!

Registration Fee - $365

Fee includes a $150 non-refundable deposit. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Please send your application into EHH as directed and if you are accepted into the 2011 4-H Horsemanship Camp you can finalize your registration and pay all camp fees. All payments will be done online through the camp Millstone website following application acceptance.

Teen Retreat

When: March 11-13, 2011
Cost: $90 (scholarships may be available) - includes transportation, 4 meals, 2 nights lodging, workshop materials and t-shirt

Be prepared to learn a lot, make new friends and have a great time. This will be a two-night retreat. Participants will need to come prepared to stay in cabins (bring their own sleeping bags, pillow, toiletries, etc.). We will be leaving the extension office at 5:00pm on Friday and will return by lunch on Sunday. The weekend will be kicked off with mixers and officer introductions on Friday night.

Saturday will consist of a morning assembly, workshops, afternoon activities and a dance that night. Sunday morning, we will have our closing assembly, elections, and adjourn around 10:00 am. Ambassador workshops will be offered. To register, contact the Extension Office.

Dairy Quiz Bowl

Do you like ice cream, steak, hamburgers or cheese? How much do you know about dairy cows or the dairy industry? Want to know more? You may want to think about becoming a Dairy Quiz Bowl member. Eastern NC Livestock School

Purpose: Provide youth and adults an opportunity to learn more about 4-H Livestock projects from start to finish. A mixture of intense classroom and hands-on activities will equip individuals with information needed to have a quality 4-H Livestock project.

Instructors: Instructors who are experts in their field have been asked to conduct this training. This event will be specifically designed for cattle, hogs, sheep, and meat goats. Participants will only be allowed to attend one of the four schools. This an annual event so participants may attend other species schools in the future. *Instructors may adjust the agenda as deemed necessary to provide the best educational opportunity.

Food Show

It’s time to show off all your culinary skills at the upcoming Food Show! The Area Food Show including Ashe, Alleghany, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties will be held on February 19 at East Wilkes Middle School and is open to youth ages 5 and up. There are three age categories to participate in: Cloverbud (ages 5-8), Junior (9-13), and Senior (14-18).

Categories include snack/appetizer, main dish, vegetable/soup/salad and desserts.

The theme for this event is “4-H Hungry to Help: The Kitchen Is Open!”

Transportation will be provided. Setup will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 9:45 a.m. Your dish must be cooked ahead of time. Judging will begin at 9:45 a.m. While judges taste all the wonderful recipes, participants can enjoy different hands-on activities. Participants will be judged on recipe, taste, table setting and nutrition. All participants will receive a cookbook of all the recipes featured at the event. 4th Annual NC Operation Military Kids Visual Arts Contest.

NC OMK is excited to announce the 4th Annual NC Operation: Military Kids Visual Arts Contest. *The contest is open to all North Carolina youth. (You do not have to have a parent in the military to participate).

*Age categories are 5-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, and 16-19. Designed to introduce youth to the Visual Arts as a part of the 4-H Expressive Arts Curriculum, youth will utilize their skills and their artistry to capture their views of America and patriotism.

Alleghany 4-H Ski Trip

Are you 12 years old or older & want to learn how to ski or snowboard? Here’s your chance! Alleghany 4-H will be taking a trip to French-Swiss Ski College at Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock on Saturday, February 5th. Cost will be $25 for skiing and $30 for snowboarding. Cost includes transportation, lift ticket, equipment, skiing/snowboarding lesson and snack. You will need to bring money for dinner. We will be leaving the County Office Building at 3:30 pm and will return around 1 am. Space is limited so contact the office to register or for more information. You must register by January 21st.

Military Care Packages

If you would like to mail the care packages yourself, we have been informed if you use "If it Fits, it Ships" process there is no charge for shipping. Most USPS offices will ship to an APO/FPO address at no charge.

Scholarships are open to 4-H members in North Carolina who will be registered as a full-time student.Recipients awarded NC 4-H Academic Scholarships will have an outstanding record of 4-H participation and achievement. Additionally, recipients will possess an excellent high school record of academic achievement measured chiefly by their performance on solid secondary school courses including English, mathematics, physical sciences and social sciences. Also, recipients will demonstrate an aptitude for college work which will be measured by their performance on college entrance examinations including the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT).

West Central District Leaders Fall Day

The WCD Leaders Fall Day will be held Saturday, November 13 in Catawba County. Workshops include: Leatherwork, Lambs 101, ARIE, NC 4-H Hungry to Help, Dried Flower Arranging, How to Help your 4-H Teen Love Cumulative Records, Fundamentals of 4-H & Etiquette for Today’s 4-H, Parliamentary Procedure, and Understanding Ages & Stages of Youth Development.

4-H - Hungry to Help

We’ve all heard the old adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well, it’s true – nutritious food is good medicine. Food is one of our most basic needs. Along with oxygen, water, and shelter, it is necessary for human survival. In a nation as affluent as the United States, no child should go hungry. Yet everyday hunger disrupts the lives of 1 in 5 children in North Carolina.

Hunger is a problem hiding “in plain sight” in North Carolina. Whether it involves skipping meals, eating less than is needed to live a healthy life, or making do with foods that are filling but not nutritious, hunger’s effects can be devastating, especially among our more vulnerable citizens, including children and older adults.

According to an analysis by Feeding America, a hunger relief organization with which the food banks are affiliated, North Carolina ranks as the second-worst state in the nation when it comes to children under 5 lacking regular access to nutritious food and as 10th-worst for children of all ages.

In May 2009, Feeding America released the results of its first analysis of food insecurity in early childhood, “Child Food Insecurity in the United States: 2005 - 2007.” North Carolina ranked second worst in the nation with 24.1 percent of its children under 5 judged to be food insecure and lacking regular access to nutritional food. The state was 10th worst in the same Feeding America study of food insecurity in children 0-18 years old. Both studies used figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Nationally, the food insecurity average is 17 percent for children under 5.

To combat hunger the NC 4-H Youth Development program and the Food Banks of North Carolina, all of which are affiliates of Feeding AmericaTM our nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, have teamed up to promote awareness of hunger in North Carolina and to make an impact in local communities through a new hunger awareness initiative entitled “Hungry to Help.”

According to Dr. Marshall Stewart, State 4-H Leader, “Exciting plans are underway to prepare 4-H’ers, 4-H volunteers and alumni to host a variety of hunger awareness programs, can food drives (virtual and real) and sponsor hunger related volunteer efforts in their local communities. Extension offices across the state will become “drop-off” locations for can food collections and the entire Extension family is gearing up to prepare participants to be citizen leaders for hunger relief.”

4-H recognizes that knowledge and understanding are powerful tools in the battle to end hunger, and that food insecurity undermines our nation’s investments in education and health care.

Alleghany County 4-H will begin meeting this initiative by collecting food for the Solid Rock Food Closet during the months of October & November. Please bring food items by the Extension Office (90 S. Main St., Sparta) Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through November 22nd.

What can you bring? The most needed items are canned meat (chicken, turkey, ham, beef stew), canned fish (tuna, salmon), peanut butter, pasta, rice, deluxe macaroni & cheese, soup, canned vegetables (beans, corn, potatoes), or canned fruit (pears, apples, peaches). Other items you could donate are: canned fruit cocktail, canned ravioli, canned spaghetti ‘n meatballs, canned pork ‘n beans, breakfast bars, apple sauce cups, pudding cups, small plastic bottles of 100% juice, or small boxes of cereal.

4-H is a community of six million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. North Carolina Cooperative Extension at North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University conducts the 4-H program. More than 240,926 young people between the ages of 5 and 19 participate in North Carolina 4-H programs each year with the help of 21,221 adult and youth volunteers.

Teen Leadership Deadline Extended

Just a reminder, the deadline is quickly approaching to register for the Teen Leadership Retreat. Deadline to register has been extended until October 27th. Don't miss out on a chance to meet teens from across the west and west central district and participate in some wonderful workshops where you will learn about leadership development and our 4-H theme (Hungry to Help).

Leadership Conference will be on November 13th at the Sertoma 4-H Educational Center. and is open to youth ages 13 and up (must be 13 as of January 1). Fall 2010 4-H Target Shooting Sports Workshop

The Fall 2010 North Carolina 4-H Target Shooting Sports Workshop will be held October 22-24, 2010 at Millstone 4-H Camp, near Ellerbe, NC. The workshop is designed to equip adult volunteers to work with youth in 4-H Target Shooting Sports
Clubs. Participants will have the opportunity to share ideas and information while enhancing their skills in teaching youth through the use of the National 4-H Shooting Sports curriculum materials.

We will be accepting a total of 75 participants for the workshop - no more than 15 in each of the following disciplines: shotgun, pistol, archery, muzzleloading, and rifle (note: accepted applicants will participate in only one discipline throughout the entire weekend long training). Participants are required to pay a $75 fee to help offset some of the cost for the workshop. We are asking that all participants be registered with their local Extension office as 4-H volunteers prior to attending our workshop.

This is a hands on workshop, participants will be required to pass a written test in their discipline and required to teach portions of their curriculum as part of a practicum test. Participants should be familiar with the shooting disciplines they choose; we will not be teaching participants to shoot but rather how to use shooting sports as a youth development tool.

There are expectations on the county level once you have attended training.

Fodder Trot Trail

Want to get lost in a corn maze? Come with us on an adventure to Fodder Trot Trail. The theme this year is "A Salute to American Soldier" so we will be making our way through a cannon, a soldier, stars and the US Navy Symbol. After we find our way out, we'll be enjoying hot dogs roasted on a campfire but be sure to save room for S'mores.

We will meet at the County Office Building on Friday, October 22nd at 5:45. Entry fee, transportation and snacks included. You don't want to miss out on the fall fun.

SCarowinds & Hungry to Help

Join us as we make a frightful trip to Scarowinds on Friday, October 15th and help fight hunger at the same time. In an effort to help make a difference in the hunger problem we are inviting teens ages 13 (as of Jan 1) and older to join us as we travel to Carowinds SCarowinds. There will be no exceptions on the age limit. In order to be eligible to attend, teens must bring at least 5 (five) non-perishable food items to the Extension Office by Wednesday October 13th. For every 3 three additional items you bring in $1 will be deducted from your ticket price.

Suggestions of non-perishable food items: boxed macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, canned foods, dried fruit, canned or boxed juice, cereal, oatmeal, canned tuna or chicken, and peanut butter. For a full list of items click HERE. Please no glass containers or perishable items.

Teen Leadership Focus Conference

The West Central Teen Leadership Focus (taking the place of State Council Conference) will be held at Sertoma 4-H Educational Center on Saturday, November 13, 2010. The retreat will begin with registration at 8am and workshops at 9:30am. These retreats are designed for teens, so 4-H’ers ages 13 (as of Jan. 1) and older are invited to attend.

The cost to attend the Teen Leadership Focus Conference is $40. This includes lunch and snacks. Some workshops will focus on our theme (Hungry To Help); however, the majority of the workshops will be focused on Leadership Development including selected Ambassador tracks. This is a day event only.

For those of you that may be interested in attending the West-Central Science Fair there will be a Science Fair Workshop at the Lincoln County Extension Center on Thursday, August 26th from 6 - 8 pm. You can register for the event by calling (704-736-8458). You must register by Monday, August 23rd.

Open Horse Show

Come join us on Saturday, September 11, 2010 for a fun-filled day at our Open Horse Show. The gates open at 7:30 am, registration begins at 8:00 am and the show starts at 9:00 am. There are divisions for ALL age groups. For a copy of the program and class list, click here.

Alleghany Agricultural Fair

The Alleghany Co. Ag. Fair is just around the corner (August 23rd - August 28th). Don't miss out on exciting livestock shows, thrilling carnival rides, a heart stopping lawnmower race, petting zoo, with a grand finale of fireworks. Also, be sure to enter your 09/10 achievements at the Exhibition Building and show off your talents in a wide range of categories. There's something for everyone in both youth and adult categories. You don't want to miss on a chance to walk away with a blue ribbon and a cash prize to boot.

Kid's Night will be Thursday August25th and musical guest, Shawn McDonald will be performing on Friday August 27th in a free concert (sponsored by Cornerstone Christian Fellowship).

Alleghany 4-H will be hosting a pet show so be sure to bring out your favorite furry, feathered or cold-blooded friend and show them off too.
